Why AWS for Backup & Data Protection?

There are several key benefits to using AWS in your data protection strategy. These include:

  • Durability

Amazon Simple Storage (Amazon S3) and Amazon Glacier are perfectly designed for 99.999999999 percent (11 nines) durability for objects stored in the platforms. Both platforms offer highly reliable locations for backing up your data.

  • Global infrastructure

AWS cloud infrastructure is built around regions and availability zones throughout the world. The cloud operates in 42 availability zones and 16 geographical regions across the globe. Availability zones consist of one or more discrete data centers that allow for a higher degree of application availability than what would normally be possible from a single data center.

  • Security

AWS backup provides multiple options for data access control, including encrypting data in transit and at rest.

  • Compliance

AWS is certified for compliance with multiple quality standards, including Service Organization Controls (SOC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 27001, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP). This allows you to fit the backup solution with your existing compliance program.

  • Scalability

With AWS backup, you never have to worry about capacity or running out of storage space. AWS uses advanced ethernet networking technology that enables even the most demanding applications to scale well and continue running efficiently on the platform. You can scale your consumption up or down without any extra administrative overhead.

  • Lower TCO (total cost of ownership)

The huge scale of operations helps drive down service costs and lower TCO of the storage. AWS passes these cost savings to its customers in the form of frequent price drops.

  • Pay-as-you-go pricing

You can purchase any of the numerous AWS backup services as you need them and only for the period you plan to use them. AWS has no upfront fees, long-term contracts or termination fees.

AWS Backup Storage Services for Data Protection

Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier are the two key platforms that have been designed for data backup and archival. Both offer unlimited capacity and require no media management as your data sets grow. Their low cost per GB make them a good fit for data protection cases.

You can use Amazon S3 to store and retrieve any amount of data. Amazon S3 stores data within resources called buckets. You can read, write and delete data in your buckets, with single objects of up to 5TB allowed. Amazon S3 offers three storage tiers, which include:

  • Amazon S3 Standard: for general storage of frequently accessed data. New AWS customers receive 5 GB per month of Amazon S3 standard storage for the first 12 months.
  • Amazon S3 Standard-Infrequent Access: this platform is ideal for long-lived data that is less frequently accessed.
  • Amazon Glacier: for long-term data archiving. Amazon Glacier is an extremely low cost ($0.007 per GB per month) cloud platform designed for data archiving. The service provides a secure and durable platform for online storage. Glacier is ideal for infrequently accessed data and data in which several hours is an acceptable retrieval time.
